OF CURRENT INTEREST – October 2009

H1N1 Influenza Update

As of mid-October, the H1N1 virus is becoming increasingly widespread throughout most of the country and many parts of the world. Initial doses of the H1N1 vaccine have arrived in NH and are being administered only to the highest-risk populations at this time. This includes healthcare workers and first responders with direct patient contact, pregnant women, and children aged 6 months to 5 years with chronic medical conditions. Additional shipments of the vaccine are scheduled to arrive in the state on a regular basis, and the criteria for administration will expand as stocks increase. The Chesterfield Health Department and Office of Emergency Management are meeting regularly with state and regional organizations to ensure that we are as well prepared as possible to deal with any major outbreak in this area. For now, citizens are advised to consult their normal healthcare channels, and to keep an eye on reputable online information sources, such as those listed on this website (see info/guidance link below).

OEM ORGANIZATION

Chesterfield’s Emergency Management team consists of representatives from the Selectmen, Police, Public Works, both Fire Departments, School and Health personnel, along with volunteers who coordinate resources for any emergency that may arise.

PUBLIC ALERTING

Public emergency notifications are delivered through various means, including weather alert radios, town sirens and automated Rapid Emergency Notification Telephone System (RENTS). For additional alerting information, click here.

SHELTERING

The Chesterfield School is equipped with a generator, enabling the facility to be used as an emergency shelter. Other venues are also available or under consideration as emergency shelters. For additional sheltering information, click here.

NATURAL DISASTERS

Weather and other naturally occurring events constitute by far the most common threat to our community. The Emergency Management team and other town departments work constantly to mitigate existing hazards, and to plan for and optimize response to such events. For additional information on natural disasters, click here.

HEALTH EMERGENCIES

Members of the Emergency Management team attend monthly meetings of a Regional Coordinating Committee (RCC), where representatives from area towns and local agencies work together with the County and State to develop, refine and update plans for any health-related emergency. For additional information on health emergency planning, click here

RADIOLOGICAL PLANNING

The OEM team works closely with the State and Entergy to ensure that we are as well prepared as possible to deal with any emergency at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power generating plant. This includes regular training, and a series of drills followed by a FEMA-rated exercise every two years. For more information or radiological planning, click here.
